Teaching

Attending several Arvon Foundation residential writing weeks as an eager student set me up to return as a tutor. I co-tutored 12 courses at all three writing centres and also served on Arvon’s Council of Management.I’ve taught the MA in ‘Developing the Feature Screenplay’ at the University of Exeter and was Screenwriter-in-Residence in the Department of English in 2002-03 and 2006-07. I’ve also taught radio drama at MA level at Central School of Speech & Drama and have been a visiting lecturer in TV and Radio at the Institute of Continuing Education, University of Cambridge.

I was a Royal Literary Fund Fellow at the universities of Essex, East Anglia and Sussex. I then became an Advisory Fellow, mentoring new Fellows.

“Sue not only gently introduced me to a medium I knew nothing about but, by the end, made me feel like it was the most exciting space to tell the story that compelled me. Her passion, clarity and care for the craft have stayed with me.”

Vinay Patel, screenwriter

Murdered by my Father; Doctor Who - Demons of the Punjab

“I can honestly say that Sue’s writing courses have been some of the most enjoyable and productive I’ve attended. Practical, engaging, informative and yes, downright fun. The courses were invaluable in providing the methods and tools I’d need not just to write a script but to write a better one. Sue has masses of experience and expertise, but perhaps more importantly, she also has an infectious enthusiasm for what she does and a real gift for conveying it. More please!”
